How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile
in Fredericton (2026 Guide)

By Lesli Rose · April 14, 2026 · 10 min read

If you run a business in Fredericton and you have not set up your Google Business Profile (or set it up years ago and never touched it), this guide walks you through everything. Step by step. No jargon. No shortcuts that will get your listing suspended.

Step 1: Claim or Create Your Profile

Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Search for your business name. If it already exists (Google often creates listings automatically from directory data), claim it. If not, click "Add your business to Google" and follow the prompts.

Google will ask you to verify your business. For most Fredericton businesses, this means a postcard mailed to your address with a verification code. Some businesses qualify for phone or email verification. Verification usually takes 5-7 days by mail.

Step 2: Choose the Right Primary Category

This is the single most important decision you will make. Your primary category determines which searches your business shows up for. Google offers hundreds of categories. Pick the one that most precisely describes what your business does.

Examples for common Fredericton businesses:

Plumber: "Plumber" (not "Plumbing supply store")

Dentist: "Dentist" (not "Dental clinic")

Restaurant: The cuisine type (e.g., "Italian restaurant")

Lawyer: Your specialty (e.g., "Family law attorney")

Auto repair: "Auto repair shop"

Salon: "Hair salon" or "Beauty salon"

Then add up to 9 secondary categories. These expand what you show up for without diluting your primary signal. A dentist might add "Cosmetic dentist," "Teeth whitening service," and "Emergency dental service" as secondary categories.

Step 3: Complete Every Field

Google rewards completeness. Fill in everything:

Business name (your real name, no keyword stuffing)
Address (match it exactly to your website and directories)
Phone number (local number, not a call tracking number on GBP)
Website URL
Business hours (including holiday hours)
Business description (750 characters, use your main keywords naturally)
Service area (if you go to customers instead of them coming to you)
Attributes (wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi, women-owned, etc.)
Opening date

Step 4: Add Photos (50+ Over Time)

Businesses with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than those with fewer than 10. Start with at least 10-15 photos, then add more monthly.

Photos to include:

Cover photo (your best shot, this shows first)
Logo
Exterior (so people recognize the building)
Interior (clean, well-lit, welcoming)
Team photos (builds trust)
Products or work samples
Action shots (you doing what you do)
Before/after photos (if applicable)

Name your photo files descriptively before uploading. "fredericton-plumber-kitchen-renovation.jpg" is better than "IMG_4532.jpg." Google reads file names.

Step 5: Build Your Service Catalog

Add every service you offer with a description and optional price. This gives Google detailed signals about what you do and helps you show up for service-specific searches like "drain cleaning Fredericton" instead of just "plumber Fredericton."

Step 6: Start Posting Weekly

Google Posts are free mini-updates that appear on your profile. They expire after 7 days, so post weekly. Types of posts:

Updates: What is new at your business
Offers: Promotions or seasonal specials
Events: Upcoming events or workshops
Tips: Quick advice related to your industry

Every post should include a photo, a clear message, and a call-to-action button (Call now, Learn more, Book online). Link the CTA to a relevant page on your website.

Step 7: Get Reviews

Do not wait for reviews to happen. Ask for them. After every positive interaction, send a follow-up email or text with a direct link to your Google review form. Make it as easy as possible. One click.

Respond to every review -- positive and negative -- within 24 hours. This signals engagement to Google and builds trust with future customers reading your reviews.

Step 8: Add Schema Markup to Your Website

This is the step most guides leave out. Your GBP tells Google about your business from Google's side. Schema markup on your website tells Google from your side. When both match, Google has high confidence in your data.

Add LocalBusiness schema to your website with your exact business name, address, phone, hours, and geo-coordinates. Match every detail to your GBP. This is one of the strongest trust signals you can send.

What Happens Next

A well-optimized GBP will start showing results within 2-4 weeks: more profile views, more calls, more direction requests. Getting into the Map Pack takes longer (2-4 months for most Fredericton categories) but the process starts with getting your profile right.

If this feels like a lot of work, it is. But it is the kind of work that compounds. Every photo, every post, every review, every month of consistency makes your profile stronger and harder for competitors to catch.
